SURREY, BC — On Labour Day, Imagine Surrey and mayoral candidate Mike Starchuk stand with working families across Surrey and beyond to celebrate solidarity and a commitment to progress for workers. The New Westminster District & Labour Council (NWDLC) has endorsed Mike Starchuk and five Imagine Surrey council candidates as the team to put out the fire at City Hall. The NWDLC represents over ten thousand workers living in Surrey.
NWDLC President, Janet Andrews, stated: “We believe Mike and his team have established the vision, experience and innovative thinking needed to lead Surrey as a world-class city with an improved reputation for livability, sustainability and safety. With Mike, the city we imagine is the city Surrey will become.”
Doug McCallum, Linda Annis, and Brenda Locke have fallen over each other to promise an unrealistic tax freeze that means one thing: public services are under attack and frontline workers are on the chopping block.
Despite the record of each of the three old parties, all of whom raised taxes for Surrey residents, it is clear that Surrey needs investments, not cuts. We need more police; not fewer. We need more firefighters; not fewer. We need more community centres; not fewer.
“Imagine Surrey is the only party that wants to invest in Surrey. We know an investment in our city is an investment in you,” offered Mike Starchuk, “That’s why Imagine Surrey is doubling down on working families in Surrey and calling for investments, not cuts. That means protecting services and frontline workers from cuts and bringing forward a responsible plan to grow our police and fire services, build more community centres, and keep user fees low. The tax freeze promise of the three old parties puts all of that at risk.”
Mike Starchuk – a retired Surrey Firefighter and former Chief Fire Prevention Officer – was a long-time member and table officer at IAFF Local 127.
