Imagine Surrey Will End Privatized Towing in Surrey

News release: Imagine Surrey Will End Privatized Towing in Surrey

SURREY, BC — Mike Starchuk today announced SurreyTows, a City towing and impound service built to clear crashes, stalls, and illegally stopped vehicles off Surrey’s busiest roads fast, with the fees vehicle owners already pay going to the City and back into Surrey’s roads. SurreyTows would prioritize clearing streets for faster commutes over which vehicles will return the most money.

A single stalled car in a curb lane at rush hour can back traffic up for blocks. A truck parked in a bus lane slows every bus behind it. Imagine Surrey will synchronize Surrey’s traffic lights and give buses their own lanes, and none of it helps when a stall or a parked truck blocks the lane. The fastest fix for a jam is often a tow truck that’s already close by.

The plan: SurreyTows will deploy trucks along the busiest corridors through the morning and evening rush, so crashes and stalls are cleared in minutes. Bus lanes and no-stopping zones will be kept clear at peak times. Tows and impounds for Surrey Police enforcement, including the street racing crackdown, will be included. Fees will be set by council, in public. Every dollar of net revenue reinvested in road safety, snow and ice response, and new sidewalks.

“When a car stalls on King George at 5:00 pm, the fastest way to fix Surrey’s traffic is a tow truck that’s already there,” said Starchuk. “Drivers already pay for the tow. With SurreyTows, that money stays in Surrey and pays for safer roads and faster commutes.”

“I’ve lived here 30 years and watched the traffic get worse every day,” said Kevin Wilkie, Imagine Surrey council candidate. “A line of idling cars behind a stalled truck is time lost and fuel burned for nothing. Clearing it in minutes is good for commuters and good for the air.”

“This Saturday, put out the fire at City Hall and elect a team that keeps Surrey moving,” said Starchuk.
